Patrick Mugo a decorated Kenyan Cyclist has won the Tujiamini Silver Award, with his combative cycling talents recognized by the Tujiamini initiative by SportPesa.
Patrick recently finished 9th in the Kenya Cycling Race Series for the 2023 season and has the ambition of finishing top three in 2024.Patrick has been competing locally and internationally as a professional cyclist for the last 6 years. The pedaller has a decorated history with some outstanding results including finishing 1st at Nakuru Black Mamba, 1st at Iten Black Mamba in2021. These results saw him selected to represent Kenya at Africa continental championships XCO in Namibia in 2022.
An example of Patrick’s hard work and determination is his 4thplace finish at grueling Evolution Gravel Race 2023 which takes place in Tanzania. The race renowned for its 850km of unforgiving terrain which includes 10,000 meters of elevation on its route from Arusha to the Swahili coast. Patrick finished in a respectable 4th place after racing for over 2 days and nights.
In addition to racing and competing himself, Patrick is passionate about nurturing and developing the next generation of Kenya Cyclists. By giving young aspiring cyclists the opportunity, access to equipment and passing on his knowledge of the sport, Patrick is hoping the next generation can push the boundaries and break into the international scene.
With Kenyans renowned for other aerobic sports, cycling is one that Kenyans have not been able to dominate. Perhaps on the back of the hard work of athletes like Patrick, Kenya will start competing at levels which will see them competing at big cycling events like the Olympics and Tour de France.
With the support of the Tujiamini initiative and the funds of KSh 10,000 Patrick will purchase cycling equipment as well as 3 bikes that he can use to train young kids interested in learning cycling. His long-term goals include developing a program to introduce cycling in schools and setting up cycling camps around Central region.
One aspiration which stood out to the Tujiamini Judging panelist was the aspiration to inspire the next generation of young cyclists including getting more female cyclists up and pedaling. Like many sports in Kenya, Cycling is dominated by Men.
